Beer Labels Applications

There’s no surprise that beverage labels are currently the most popular printed label application. Beverage labels are important because they serve as a way of marketing your product by getting your branding and logo onto store shelves and into consumer’s hands. Equally as important, however, beverage labels contain important government-mandated information about your product, including nutritional facts. The challenge around properly labeling a beverage is creating an effective label construction that won’t fail under the various conditions that the bottle and label go through. Adhering a label to a wet surface is not an easy task. The adhesive and facestock need to be specifically designed to withstand wet environments. From bottling to store shelf, all environments must be considered.

Custom labels display a wide variety of information based on your marketing initiatives, branding, regulatory requirements, and more. A customized label can help your product stand out while still adhering to labeling guidelines and regulations as set forth by the FDA. Nearly any beverage product can benefit from custom labels, such as:

  • Soft drinks/Juice
  • Soda
  • Alcohol
  • Beer cans and bottles
  • Bottled water
  • Canned water

Beer Bottle Label Size

Beer distributors and craft brewers may need to label a broad variety of beer bottle sizes. Customized labeling is possible for nearly any size or shape of a beverage container. Here are some of the most common types of bottles brewers might use:

  • Stubby. This 11 oz. bottle is 6.25” tall and popular among craft breweries.
  • Heritage. This 12 oz. bottle measures 7.625” inches tall, which makes it shorter and wider than a typical 12 oz. long-neck bottle.
  • Long Neck. This standard 12 oz. bottle is 9” tall and narrower than other small bottle sizes.
  • Bomber. A 22 oz. bottle, the bomber is roughly 11” tall and looks like a larger version of the long neck.
  • Mini Growler. A 32 oz. bottle that is typically around 9” tall. It has different names depending on where in the United States you are located. Regional names may include grumbler, grenade, howler, squealer, bullet, or growlette.
  • Growler. The largest beer bottle, it holds 64 oz. and stands approximately 11” tall.

How to Measure Beer Bottles for Custom Labels

Regardless of size, every bottle needs a label. Some bottles may have a flat depressed label panel area, while some may not. It is imperative that the label size is correct so that the label stays on after application. There are a variety of considerations to have when selecting label size. The size of the bottle and how the labels get applied will affect this decision. Here is how you should determine what size label is proper for the bottle you are using:

  • Measure the height of the label panel between the ridges. If your bottle doesn’t have ridges, measure the flat space between the curves at the top and bottom of the bottle.
  • Measure the circumference of the bottle by wrapping a flexible measuring tape around the bottle and find the measurement where the ends meet in order to determine the bottle’s width. This measurement will represent the maximum width of the label panel and help you determine the maximum width of your label. Many beer labels have a gap in between the edges of the label.
  • Application Consideration is critical. The construction of the label might change if the label is going to be machine applied or applied by hand. For high-speed applicators, you’re most likely going to want a stronger PET liner (backing) for smooth dispensing on canning line equipment. This is just one example of an application consideration.
